Panel Discussion: Diversity, Inclusion, and Cultural Competency -

What It Means to Be an Ally

In the most successful organizations, Diversity, Inclusion, and Cultural Competency are core values. HR professionals have to understand that different demographic groups think and communicate differently.  Their cultural differences must be understood before newcomers from diverse backgrounds are truly integrated and included in a company’s workforce. Many employees struggle to recognize the part they can play in a diverse workforce because they want to engage but don’t have the tools to meaningfully participate as an effective friend, colleague, or ally. How can organization capitalize on their energy and interest by providing them with training and support to understand cultural interfaces and see their diverse workforce as an organizational asset?

 

The panelists will share their experiences and opinions on successful – or not – diversity and inclusion strategies within the workplace. They will highlight the support and encouragement received from their leadership and allies that helped to create a more inclusive workplace.

 

Facilitator

 

Catharine Morisset is a litigation partner with Fisher Phillips' Seattle office, representing local and national employers in litigation in state and federal courts, on appeal. She believes in working closely with clients to address workplace issues proactively and as a valued partner to develop a successful workforce.  She uses her litigation experience to work closely with clients across all industries to provide effective preventive counseling and workforce training.

Karen Dove, Executive Director, Apprenticeship and Non-Traditional Employment for Women (ANEW)

ANEW improves people’s lives by providing quality training, employment navigation, and supportive services leading to successful family wage careers. She comes to ANEW from Montana, where she led programs and advocated for policies focused on building economic security for all. Karen utilizes her entrepreneurial spirit to create and implement new and innovative programs aimed at moving people toward family wage jobs. When not serving her community, you can find her on the beach with her children.

 

 

Marty Fisher, Human Resources Director, City of Kent

As an HR executive for some of the best-known brands in the world - Starbucks, Abercrombie and Fitch, T-Mobile, and Darden Restaurants, Marty has built highly-successful, diverse teams and has implemented many strategic organizational initiatives that have strengthened organizations while growing business results. Originally from Brooklyn, New York, Marty is proud of bringing private sector thinking into public sector action.

 

 

 

Bernardo Ruiz, Former Director, School Family Partnerships, Equity, and Race Relations, and Native American Education Department, Seattle Public Schools

In collaboration with community partners, families, and school leaders, Bernardo led the development of the Seattle Public Schools' Ensuring Educational and Racial Equity Policy and its Racial Equity Analysis Tool. He is a nationally recognized speaker, facilitator, and trainer. 

 

 

Mark Sullivan, Owner, Sullivan Planning and Strategy Consulting

Mark previously served as Senior Manager for Workforce Planning & Strategy for the State of Washington, and as an to the Governor and agency leaders on workforce development strategies. He holds a Bachelor Degree from the Evergreen State College and a Master Degree from Harvard University. Mark currently serves as the President of the American Society for Public Administration Evergreen Chapter.

 

 

 

Shellie Willis, Director of Strategic Initiatives, Workforce Central

Shellie Willis is a U.S. Army Retired Master Sergeant. She is the Director of Strategic Initiatives for WorkForce Central, a workforce development council, and is the CEO and Founder of Redefining Your Future, LLC. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Management Studies from the University of Maryland; is a Certified Defense Financial Manager; and Lean Six Sigma Black Belt. Shellie is a wife and mother of two children and believes that being redefined means Shifting your lifestyle and perspective while embracing the next phase in life.

*Students must be enrolled in the equivalent of 6 credit hours (minimum) per term in a degree seeking program including coursework related to Human Resource Management.


Refund Policy: We will gladly issue refunds for event registrations that are canceled before the registration deadline. Because we need to make venue arrangements and order meals in advance, we are unable to refund registration fees after the deadline. No-shows who have registered but not paid in advance will be billed. Substitutions are always welcome. Please request your substitute to inform the registration desk that they are attending in your place.
